1 John 1:2 – God has made known to his creations the mystery of redemption.

The Text

 Ὃ ἑωράκαμεν καὶ ἀκηκόαμεν, ἀπαγγέλλομεν ὑμῖν, ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς κοινωνίαν ἔχητε μεθʼ ἡμῶν· καὶ ἡ κοινωνία δὲ ἡ ἡμετέρα μετὰ τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ μετὰ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ·

Ἀπλῶς (aplōs) Peshat (פְּשָׁט) (Literal Meaning)

  1. That which we have seen and heard, and proclaim to you, and that you have fellowship with us, that fellowship, however, is with the father and his son Jesus Christ.

Ἀλληγορία (allēgoria) Remez (רֶמֶז) (Hinted Meaning)

  1. Fellowship – it is more than simply gathering, but is “the” fellowship, the union, mystical, spiritual, supernatural, metaphysical between God and his creations.
  2. Received and Proclaimed – this mystery, this union has been made known from once being hidden. Its sender is God or Christ, and its receiver is the prophets and apostles chosen from out of his creation to mark the way for all others to find God.

Διδασκαλία (didaskalia) Derash (דְּרַשׁ) (Homiletical Meaning)

  1. We are to heed the message delivered once to the saints, for there is no other name under heaven by which men are to be saved.

Μυστικός (mystikos) Sod (סוֹד) (Mystical Meaning)

  1. None

Μυστήριον (mystērion) Pesher (פְּשַׁר) (Prophetic Meaning)

  1. None
